Modern austerity

Self provides a number of actions aimed at discipline, limiting the development of the will and a number of other parameters. When viewed from the side, you'll find a number of similarities modern humans, and the representative of antiquity or the Middle Ages. Self-improvement is akin to asceticism. A person needs a period that would have to learn to control himself, to weigh thoughts, act rationally.
In the Middle Ages, it was permissible due to the complete withdrawal from society, keeping a lonely life, or, as is called, the small hermit.
Small hermit involves self-discipline and control over their actions, being cut off from society. It is entirely justified and acceptable at the initial stage. But man is an element of society, and its value varies from abilities impact on the world and other individuals. Personal development for the sake of self - a dead-end process. Austerity alone - this is only a model of behavior that is destroyed in a collision with the objective world.
The term "Big hermit" means preservation of the principles of discipline, control of behavior, already included in the society. Resistance priest learned in a brothel. A person who is able to control himself in the group of people - and is able to influence them.
The modern world gives us plenty of opportunities for arranging their own "caves". From food to order and remote work - finishing minimalist design and techniques of self-development.
Also, the world produces more temptations of options for personalization and blurs the line between necessary and unnecessary. The same consumerism, nothing but a medieval "gluttony". A man fills his life with things that show the status of a subjective, not reinforcing it to their functionality.

Being a hermit, and remain valid unit of society - it's really hard. But the possibility of a rational view of the world, far more than the fruits of blindly following the herd instinct.
